U. S. To Establish Advanced Defense Technology Center in Morocco BODY: Lagos, Nigeria – The United States Africa Command (Africom) and Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance military cooperation, a move that signifies a significant expansion in defense technology on the African continent.
The agreement marks the establishment of the Africa Multi — Domain Training and Experimentation Centre (AMTEC) in Tan-Tan, southwestern Morocco. AMTEC will feature an Innovation and Experimentation Center, a Drone Academy, and a Multi-Domain Training Area, focusing on improving operational readiness and multidomain integration in contested environments.
The AMTEC initiative, which is set to be operational within the Sahara Desert region, is a direct reflection of the U. S. ‘s strategic commitment to Africa.
It will provide students with the ability to integrate small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) into broader military strategies and will serve as a hub for cross-functional design teams involving academic institutions and subject-matter experts. General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, highlighted Morocco’s readiness and the nation’s ability to contribute to rapid progress from concept to operational reality, providing a reliable partner for joint innovation and export opportunities.
The AMTEC’s focus on airspace deconfliction, multidomain integration, attack capabilities, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance synchronization will place it at the forefront of defense technology development in Africa.
As Africa continues to evolve in its technological capabilities, the establishment of advanced defense centers like AMTEC not only underscores the continent’s strategic importance but also positions it as a key player in the global defense technology race.
