Libreville, Gabon — July 30, 2026 – A national consultation workshop in Gabon has reached a crucial milestone, with participants from public and private sectors, NGOs, and associations collaborating to refine a proposal for a climate-resilient forestry project.
The workshop, aimed at enhancing sustainable forest management, has been instrumental in shaping a concrete proposal to be submitted to the Green Climate Fund. Participants were divided into three working groups, focusing on technical, political, and green financing aspects of the project.
The technical group suggested strengthening administrative, NGO, and association capabilities, as well as integrating a follow — up mechanism for claims into the management process.
The political group proposed harmonizing Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems and establishing quality control procedures for data. They also advocated for clearly defining the roles of each stakeholder in institutional strengthening.
The green financing group recommended engaging an external consultant to conduct a feasibility study identifying the fund’s beneficiaries and developing governance mechanisms, along with defining eligibility criteria for the Green Climate Fund.
The workshop concluded with a reminder of the collective effort required to secure the project’s success.
The director of Okoumé Capital, Fabrice Assoumou Essono, emphasized the importance of their combined strengths in presenting a compelling proposal to the Green Climate Fund. Marthe Mapangou, director of the Forest & Climate Program at The Nature Conservancy (TNC), outlined the next steps, including finalizing the concept note and preparing the full project proposal for submission in October.
The proposal’s fate will be known by mid-January 2027, following review and discussions by the Green Climate Fund.
As Gabon continues to focus on sustainable management of its forest resources, this project is poised to serve as a model for other African countries seeking to enhance climate resilience and sustainable forest management.
