LIBREVILLE, Gabon — The Gabonese Ministry of Trade, SMEs/PMIs, and Youth Entrepreneurship has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Gabonese Guarantee Corporation (SGG) and the microfinance institution Épargne et Développement du Gabon (EDG). This initiative is set to provide financial backing for 400 young entrepreneurs, totaling an impressive $400 million in funding.
The program, which is scheduled to begin in August 2026, will offer initial support to young Gabonese entrepreneurs, aiming to bolster their economic independence.
The funding will be allocated through a combination of guarantees and “social interest “loans, tailored to the needs of small businesses. This financial support will be complemented by training and follow-up services over a one-year period. Alban Etho, the Director General of the SGG, emphasized the program’s focus on social impact and the creation of sustainable jobs.
The guarantee mechanism is designed to help beneficiaries overcome credit access challenges and solidify their business activities. Jean Robert Obiang Obiang, the Director General of EDG, highlighted the role of microfinance in combating poverty and supporting small-scale economic operators, from startup to development stages.
The Gabonese government is encouraging young people across the nation’s nine provinces to take advantage of this opportunity.
The program is expected to be renewed every three to six months, with the ultimate goal of expanding to cover the entire national territory. This move is part of Gabon’s broader strategy to strengthen its economic ties with African and international partners, focusing on infrastructure development and economic diversification, particularly in the mining sector.
The partnership between the Gabonese government and the African Development Bank (AfDB) is a testament to this commitment.
A recent high — level AfDB mission to Gabon aimed to deepen dialogue and solidify the strategic partnership between the two entities.
As Gabon seeks to foster a more dynamic and inclusive economy, especially among the youth, the success of this initiative will be a critical indicator of the government’s dedication to economic growth and empowerment.
