Johannesburg, South Africa — 2026-01-23 Hundreds Flee Sporong Settlement Amid Illegal Gold Mining Violence.
In the Sporong informal settlement near Randfontein, South Africa, violence stemming from illegal gold mining operations has forced hundreds of families to flee their homes.
The once bustling community now stands largely abandoned, with residents expressing deep — seated fear and a lack of safety.
According to local reports, the violence has been relentless, with illegal miners, known as “Zama Zamas, “engaging in shooting, theft, and intimidation. Resident Miami Chauke, who sustained a bullet wound in his leg during an attack, expressed confusion over the miners’motives, noting that there is no money to be found but they continue to attack and rob the residents.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has announced an investigation into the violence, reflecting broader concerns about the situation.
The Weltevreden Landfill Site, which was previously closed due to illegal mining activities, is set to reopen following the clearing of the illegal miners.
The residents, now seeking shelter in a local community hall in Randfontein, have vowed not to return to their homes until officials can guarantee their safety. Julian Mameng, one of the displaced residents, described the situation as “very very hectic “and emphasized the heavy weaponry possessed by the illegal miners.
Illegal gold mining, a persistent issue in South Africa, has been linked to organized crime, assassinations, and extortion.
In response, the government launched a nationwide crackdown two years ago.
The SAHRC’s investigation into Sporong suggests a broader pattern of violence affecting mining-affected communities.
The clandestine artisanal miners, many from neighboring countries, have become an entrenched presence in the shantytowns surrounding Johannesburg and its satellite settlements along the gold reef. Driven by poverty and unemployment, the zama zamas often descend into abandoned shafts or dig new ones in search of gold.
As the situation unfolds, the authorities are expected to provide further details and outline their strategies to address the illegal mining activities and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
For now, the displaced families of Sporong informal settlement wait for reassurance and a return to normalcy.
