Zimbabwe Upsets Sri Lanka in T20 World Cup Group B Showdown. Harare, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe’s cricket team delivered a stunning upset by defeating co-hosts Sri Lanka, securing the top spot in Group B of the T20 World Cup.
The victory, achieved by six wickets, came with three balls to spare on Thursday and marked Zimbabwe’s second victory over a heavy-weight opponent in as many matches.
In a thrilling encounter at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the Zimbabweans were led by an unbeaten 63 from opener Brian Bennett and a swift 45 from captain Sikandar Raza.
The pair guided Zimbabwe to a target of 179, surpassing it with 12 balls to spare.
Officials commented on the matter. “We’ve been unbeaten so far, and it’s a great position to be in.
But we’ll keep our feet on the ground and enjoy the moment.”.
Zimbabwe, who had already qualified for the Super Eight, faced Sri Lanka, which had also secured its place in the next round with a victory against Australia.
The Lankans batted first, posting 178-7, with opener Pathum Nissanka contributing a half-century with 62 runs.
The Zimbabwe bowlers, led by Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, and Graeme Cremer, restricted Sri Lanka’s chase.
Muzarabani and Evans each took two wickets, with Cremer adding a further one. Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani provided a solid opening partnership with 69 runs, setting the stage for the successful chase.
Raza, who hit four sixes and two boundaries, was instrumental in the run — out of Sri Lanka’s tail-enders.
Zimbabwe’s win, which came after their upset victory over Australia, has been a major talking point in the cricket world.
The African nation, which did not qualify for the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, has made a significant impact this year, reaching the Super Eight through a continental tournament. Sri Lanka will now face England, New Zealand, and Pakistan in Group Two of the Super Eight, while Zimbabwe will be in Group One alongside India, South Africa, and the West Indies.
Zimbabwe’s next match is against the West Indies, scheduled for Monday.
The upset win has not only bolstered Zimbabwe’s reputation in the cricketing world but also highlighted the unpredictability of the sport at the international level.
