UN Mission Conducts Patrol in South Sudan Refugee Camp Following Deadly Attack. Yambio, South Sudan — The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has conducted a security patrol at the Makpandu refugee camp in Yambio, Western Equatoria, in response to a recent attack that resulted in the death of a Sudanese refugee.
The patrol aimed to evaluate the security situation and collaborate with local authorities, security forces, and refugee communities to bolster the protection of civilians and prevent further violence.
Makpandu camp, which houses thousands of Sudanese refugees who have fled conflict across the border, was established to provide safety.
However, increasing insecurity has left many families living in fear. Bekia Mahadi, a refugee at the camp with her eight children, expressed her concerns, stating that persistent violence is causing constant anxiety.
Refugee families report that armed individuals frequently enter the camp, intimidating families, looting, or burning property.
Such incidents have forced some refugees to seek safety in the bush outside the camp.
As calls for stronger protection and support grow, UN peacekeepers emphasize the importance of sustained engagement, regular patrols, and cooperation with authorities to restore a sense of safety for those who have already suffered from conflict.
The UNMISS patrol follows a deadly attack on the camp, where a Sudanese refugee lost his life.
The mission’s efforts to assess and improve security conditions are part of a broader initiative to ensure the safety and well-being of the camp’s inhabitants. Further details regarding the outcome of the patrol and any subsequent actions are expected to be released in the coming days.
