PRETORIA, South Africa — South African police are probing suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi for possessing SAPS property, including six case dockets and a substantial amount of cash exceeding R50,000. Nkosi, who was under suspension, was found to be in possession of these items, which is a cause for concern, according to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe explained that while it is not uncommon for detectives to have dockets, these should pertain only to cases assigned to them. The discovery of the dockets and cash in Nkosi’s possession is considered a red flag, prompting an investigation into how he acquired them.
Nkosi faced court on Tuesday, where he was charged with theft, defeating the ends of justice, possession of unlicensed ammunition, and a hand grenade. His bail application has been postponed to 13 April. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance, following his arrest on Friday during a raid on his Pretoria residence.
Nkosi is a member of the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit and had previously implicated himself and senior police officials in alleged connections to organised crime figures during testimony before the Madlanga Commission.
