Johannesburg, South Africa — The Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to witness a pivotal elective conference as it seeks a new leader following John Steenhuisen’s departure. Amidst a field of contenders, Sibusiso Dyonase, a Sedibeng Caucus leader and former Mr. South Africa finalist, has emerged as an unexpected rival to Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. The 2026 Federal Congress, scheduled for two days at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, promises to be a critical juncture for the party.
Dyonase, born in the Vaal region and raised by a single mother who worked as a domestic worker, has a background in grassroots politics that he brings to the forefront. His political journey began in 2010 when he joined the DA as an activist, leading to his election as Public Relations Councillor in Sedibeng in 2021. Dyonase has also served as a DA Caucus Deputy Chairperson and Deputy DA Youth Regional Chairperson.
His current role as DA Caucus Leader in Sedibeng District underscores his commitment to the party and his readiness for a leadership role. “We are going to have to work together with the elected leaders to actually move the Democratic Alliance forward, “Dyonase told eNCA, emphasizing the need for unity within the party. The DA Federal Congress features a list of candidates for various positions, with Dyonase’s name appearing prominently, reflecting his ambition and the party’s recognition of his potential.
As the contest for leadership intensifies, Dyonase’s entry into the race has added a new layer of unpredictability to the DA’s leadership battle.
