Maputo, Mozambique — The United Nations has injected nearly $98 million into Mozambique’s humanitarian efforts, a critical injection to combat the compounded crises of conflict and climate-related disasters. This allocation, including $83. 3 million from the Eastern and Southern Africa Humanitarian Fund and $14.
5 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, is a response to the escalating challenges facing the southeastern African nation.
The funding aims to tackle immediate needs such as food for families whose livelihoods have been disrupted, safe drinking water in areas affected by flooding and contamination, and healthcare for those cut off from essential services. It also provides emergency shelter and assistance for those who have lost their homes.
In regions like Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces, where conflict has led to displacement and disruption, the support is targeted at conflict — affected districts.
Meanwhile, in central and southern Mozambique, the focus is on flood — affected areas, including Gaza Province, Sofala Province, and Maputo Province, where communities are still reeling from recent disasters. This funding is crucial at a time of significant economic pressure, aiming to save lives, reduce suffering, restore access to clean water and sanitation, prevent disease outbreaks, and ensure families can meet their basic needs. It contributes to the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, which requires $534 million to assist 1.
7 million people across the country.
The Mozambican government, in collaboration with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), is working to coordinate the response to the crises.
The regional approach is highlighted by the integration of the SADC Emergency Response Team into the national humanitarian coordination mechanism.
The international community’s response to Mozambique’s crises will be a critical indicator of its commitment to humanitarian principles and regional stability.
