CITY, DRC — The University of Kikwit (UNIKIK) hosted a landmark conference on May 25, 2026, to examine the African Union’s (AU) peacekeeping endeavors 25 years after its inception. Titled “The African Union 25 Years On: A Review of Peacekeeping Operations and Future Prospects, “the event convened academics, students, and distinguished guests in Muzito Hall to scrutinize the AU’s achievements and areas requiring enhancement in maintaining peace and security across the continent. Speakers and participants at the conference, organized by the Faculty of Law, acknowledged the AU’s role in supporting peace operations in conflict-affected regions.
However, there was a consensus that the institution needs stronger institutional capacity, better funding mechanisms, and increased cooperation among member states to address ongoing security threats effectively.
The eastern DRC has witnessed a resurgence of armed groups, notably the Rwanda — backed March 23 Movement (M23), since 2021, raising questions about the AU’s effectiveness in the region. Despite the establishment of peacekeeping missions, the region remains embroiled in violence and instability. Participants called for a more proactive approach to conflict resolution, emphasizing the need for early intervention and preventive measures.
They highlighted the importance of robust coordination between the AU, the United Nations, and regional economic communities to tackle the complex security challenges in the DRC. Jean Bosco Mayele, a researcher at UNIKIK, emphasized the need for enhanced partnerships to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated response to conflicts.
The conference also underscored the importance of peacekeeping in Africa and called for improved training, better equipment, and enhanced logistical support for peacekeepers.
As the AU celebrates its 25th anniversary, the discussions serve as a call to action for the institution to address its shortcomings and bolster its role in maintaining peace and security on the continent.
