Officials Commented on the Matter.
The assistance comes amidst a fragile humanitarian situation, where the population has faced months of displacement, uncertainty, and disruptions to essential services, including safe water and healthcare.
The ICRC, in collaboration with the Sudan Red Crescent Society (SRCS), has distributed a month’s worth of food to those affected.
Additionally, nutritional supplements are set to be distributed to over 7,000 children and pregnant or lactating women to address their specific nutritional needs. Freya Raddi, head of operations for the ICRC in Sudan, emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and civilian objects from harm during hostilities, including health facilities and infrastructure vital for survival. She highlighted the necessity of preserving and restoring essential services to alleviate humanitarian suffering and help communities endure the consequences of conflict.
Emergency health services have been bolstered through community first — aid teams, support to health facilities, and deployment of specialized medical capacity. Since the beginning of the year, over 850 weapon-wounded patients have been treated at Al Obeid Teaching Hospital, illustrating the ongoing pressure on health services. Local emergency response capacities have also been reinforced, with 36 trained Red Crescent volunteers active across 12 displacement sites in Al Obeid, providing first aid and referrals to health facilities.
Between April and May, these teams assisted nearly 400 people. Hygiene promotion, cholera prevention, and sanitation activities are being conducted for 6,000 displaced households, while the ICRC and water authorities are rehabilitating and drilling boreholes to improve access to safe water.
The situation in Al Obeid underscores the broader humanitarian emergency in Sudan, where the ongoing conflict has led to widespread displacement, violence, and increased food insecurity.
The ICRC and its partners continue to work tirelessly to provide relief to those affected, highlighting the urgent need for international support to address the root causes of the crisis.
