CITY, Sudan — The United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan has released a report detailing further evidence of atrocities in Darfur, indicating potential genocide against the Zaghawa and Fur communities.
The mission has identified mass killings, systematic abductions of women and girls, and mass gang rapes in El Fasher, Sudan’s Darfur region, as markers of genocide.
The report also warns of similar patterns of violence and devastation emerging in El Obeid, prompting the mission to launch an urgent inquiry into alleged human rights violations and abuses there.
The UN Human Rights Council has passed a resolution to investigate these violations, following a resolution earlier this week.
The mission has called for effective accountability, including prompt cooperation with the International Criminal Court.
As civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, the Fact — Finding Mission will continue its investigations and report on the situation in and around El Obeid to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.
The Sudanese government has denied the allegations of genocide and accused the UN of bias against the military government.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has resulted in a significant number of casualties and displaced persons, making it one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
The UN Fact — Finding Mission has been documenting violations committed by both sides in the conflict.
The report underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and accountability for those responsible for the atrocities committed against the civilian population.
