DR Congo & Uganda Collaborate on BVD Outbreak Response and Border Security BODY: KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda are intensifying their efforts to combat the Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) outbreak, while also enhancing border security and cooperation.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is playing a pivotal role in this joint response, integrating biological security measures into the outbreak management.
The BVD outbreak, caused by the Simba virus, has raised concerns about cross — border transmission, necessitating a coordinated regional approach.
The Africa CDC, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and other stakeholders, is working to strengthen national and regional capacities to manage biological risks and prepare for future outbreaks. Key initiatives include: – Ensuring the safe, secure, and accountable management of BVD patient samples throughout their lifecycle. – Supporting the operation, maintenance, and security of facilities and equipment, and the stewardship of biological materials.
– Enhancing the security of Ebola treatment centers, laboratories, and sample transportation. – Promoting the safe and responsible scientific use of BVD-related samples. – Strengthening the capacities of frontline and laboratory workforces through training and simulation exercises.
In addition to the BVD response, the DRC and Uganda are focusing on improving border security and trade.
The integration of customs systems and joint security patrols is expected to improve cross — border management and reduce the risks associated with the movement of people and goods.
The Africa CDC’s involvement in the BVD outbreak response demonstrates the value of regional collaboration in managing infectious diseases.
As both countries continue to deepen economic and security cooperation, the integration of customs systems and joint security patrols will be crucial in achieving these goals.
