CAPE TOWN — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has requested a postponement of the impeachment hearing, stating that he is not evading accountability but rather aiming to resolve a legal matter.
The court application to halt the Impeachment Committee proceedings began on Wednesday and is ongoing at the Western Cape High Court.
The opposition parties, including the EFF, MK Party, African Transformation Movement, and United Africans Transformation, contend that Ramaphosa did not adequately present a case for the interdict to be granted. They also emphasized that the Parliamentary Impeachment Committee’s actions are not unlawful, as it seeks to execute the order of the Constitutional Court. Senior Counsel Wim Trengove suggested that a temporary delay would enable the court to assess the legality of the independent panel’s report before the ongoing process proceeds further.
