Abebe Aemro Selassie to Step Down as IMF African Department Director. Selassie has been at the helm of AFR since 2016, guiding the department through significant changes and challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and global trade policy shifts. During his tenure, Selassie oversaw the Fund’s engagement with 45 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, adapting to the region’s evolving needs. He played a pivotal role in reinforcing the IMF’s partnership with African members, adding a 25th chair to its Executive Board to increase the region’s voice.
Selassie also focused on tailored policy advice and capacity development, deepening engagement in key countries and supporting fragile states. Ms. Georgieva praised Selassie’s leadership, noting his commitment to the Fund’s mission and his impact on Africa’s economic stability.
A national of Ethiopia, Selassie joined the IMF in 1994 and has held various senior positions, including Deputy Director in AFR, Mission Chief for Portugal and South Africa, and Senior Resident Representative in Uganda.
