ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA.
Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia and the African Union headquarters, is a living testament to the continent’s aspirations for integration and cultural richness. During a recent visit, the city’s vibrant atmosphere and warm hospitality to African visitors underscored the shared identity and aspirations of the African continent.
Upon arrival, the visa — on-arrival process for African nationals, significantly more affordable than for others, highlighted the continent’s commitment to fostering unity and solidarity.
The city’s streets, adorned with green spaces and traditional Ethiopian cuisine, offer a vivid snapshot of Africa’s cultural diversity. The African Union Media Fellows, representing nations like Zimbabwe, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya, gathered at the AU headquarters, reflecting the continent’s dedication to diversity and inclusivity.
The visit included a tour of the AU headquarters, where the group learned about the African Union’s policies and the autonomy of member states in implementing them. Discussions on policies such as the zero hunger initiative, which has yet to be fully realized across member states, were part of the learning experience.
The tour also showcased Addis Ababa’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community development, with highlights including the transformation of the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum and the empowerment of women through cooking and selling Enjera, a traditional Ethiopian flatbread.
As the tour concluded, the group was treated to a fireworks display and water sprinkled into the sky, symbolizing the importance of unity, peace, and development for all citizens.
