N’Djamena, Chad – The African Water Forum, co-organized with the World Bank, convened in N’Djamena on July 15 and 16, 2026, to address critical water security issues across the continent. Officials commented on the matter.
The urgency of the situation was highlighted by the fact that over 400 million people in Africa lack basic drinking water, and more than 700 million lack basic sanitation.
The forum aimed to endorse the WASH+ Water Security Investment Roadmap, a strategy designed to mobilize leadership and financing for water security.
The African Union has long advocated for a more strategic approach to managing Africa’s water resources, aligning with the broader objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, both of which emphasize sustainable development and regional integration. Regional officials anticipate discussions on the implementation of Country Water Compacts, government-led frameworks that integrate policy reform, institutional strengthening, and investment planning into a single approach to water management. These compacts are seen as crucial for bridging the gap in water access and improving water security.
Gabon, despite its abundant water resources, faces significant challenges in ensuring equitable access for its population.
The forum provided an opportunity for Gabon to showcase its efforts in transforming water resources into real access for all, as highlighted by government statements.
The outcomes of the forum are expected to significantly impact millions across Africa, providing a roadmap for overcoming the water scarcity crisis and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
