Geneva, Switzerland — The Deputy Permanent Representative of Tanzania to the United Nations in Geneva has emphasized the significance of inclusive, balanced, and future-oriented intellectual property systems during the 68th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Tanzania, represented by Ambassador Temu, underscored the strategic role of intellectual property as a driver of innovation, creativity, industrialization, and sustainable socio-economic development. Daren Tang on his reappointment and expressed gratitude for the Secretariat’s preparations. Tanzania, in alignment with the African Group and the Least Developed Countries, recognized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in accelerating innovation and economic growth.
The delegation highlighted the necessity of inclusive IP frameworks, capacity building, and technology transfer to enable developing countries to fully benefit from AI and other emerging technologies. Joining Ambassador Temu were key stakeholders from Tanzania, including the CEO of BRELA, the Executive Director of the Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA), and a Senior Communication Officer from the World Bank Tanzania. This delegation showcased Tanzania’s dedication to intellectual property development and stakeholder engagement.
The Tanzanian delegation expressed appreciation for WIPO’s technical and capacity-building support in Tanzania, noting specific projects such as the IP Management Clinic for SMEs and Startups, the establishment of a WIPO IP Training Institution, and the installation of the IPAS 4 system in Zanzibar. Tanzania reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its IP system through legal reforms, improved service delivery, effective enforcement, institutional capacity building, and public awareness.
