Harare, Zimbabwe — In a groundbreaking initiative, telehealth is revolutionizing healthcare access in rural Zimbabwe, a nation addressing significant healthcare challenges. ZimSmart Villages, in partnership with NetOne and Zimbabwe Posts, launched this telehealth program in 2024, aiming to bridge the gap between rural communities and medical professionals. Anymore Kadzunge, a 38-year-old farmer from Chimbondi, exemplifies the program’s impact.
After enduring three months of chest pains and dizziness, Kadzunge sought help at a telehealth center.
A nurse tested her blood pressure and, to her shock, found it to be extremely high. Through a video consultation, she was swiftly connected with a doctor who diagnosed her with hypertension and prescribed medication. Within days, her condition improved significantly.
Zimbabwe’s rural healthcare system has long been underfunded and understaffed, with the Ministry of Health and Child Care reporting less than one health facility for every 10,000 people in some urban areas, and a national average of 1. 1 facilities per 10,000, well below the target of two facilities per 10,000. Telehealth is offering a glimmer of hope by connecting patients with doctors through video consultations, reducing the need for travel and increasing access to healthcare for rural populations.
To date, the program has conducted over 28,000 virtual consultations across seven of Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces. While challenges remain, such as under-resourced healthcare infrastructure, limited internet connectivity, and low health literacy levels, the telehealth initiative is gaining momentum and is seen as a critical solution to Zimbabwe’s healthcare crisis.
As Kadzunge continues to manage her hypertension with the help of telehealth services, she is living proof of the positive impact this initiative can have on the lives of rural Zimbabweans.
