International Albinism Day: Gabon’s ALBA Promotes Self-acceptance and Skin Care BODY: LIBREVILLE, Gabon – In celebration of International Albinism Day, the Association ALBA held a sensitization event at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Libreville (CHUL) on June 13, 2026.
The theme of the event, “Fier de ma peau, célébrons toutes les couleurs de peau “(Proud of my skin, let’s celebrate all skin colors), aimed to foster self-acceptance and highlight the importance of proper skin care for individuals with albinism. Participants emphasized that those with albinism should be proud of their skin, which, beyond its color, serves as a vital protective barrier for the body. Dermatologist Dr.
Stéphanie Ntame highlighted the need for individuals with albinism to protect themselves from the sun to prevent skin cancer and other complications. Dr. Nguélé épse Messani Tultum, also a dermatologist, discussed the unique characteristics of albinism and the necessity for specialized skincare.
The event also addressed the public’s growing interest in skin health and self-acceptance.
The Fondation Ma Bannière, led by First Lady Zita Oligui Nguema, has been collaborating with ALBA to combat stigma and promote the well-being of individuals with albinism. UNESCO and ALBA have been instrumental in raising awareness and combating prejudice against persons with albinism.
The sensitization meeting at CHUL is part of a broader effort to promote inclusivity and ensure that individuals with albinism have equal access to healthcare and education.
The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle faced by this vulnerable group and the need for a concerted effort by governments, organizations, and communities to support their rights and well — being.
