LIBREVILLE, Gabon — On July 14, 2026, the Gabonese Minister of Justice, Augustin Emane, officially opened a technical workshop in Libreville to validate the harmonized registry of places of deprivation of liberty in Gabon.
The event also featured a training session for actors in the penal chain on detention practices in line with human rights standards, according to the Gabonese Press Agency. Emane, a member of the government, commended the support of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Gabon, Fatou Aminata Lo, and the United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa, a strategic partner in Gabon’s judicial modernization and international human rights commitments. Addressing judges, judicial police officers, prison administration staff, lawyers, and other participants, Emane emphasized that the harmonized registry is a response to recommendations from international human rights protection mechanisms.
He stated that the registry will ensure better traceability of individuals deprived of liberty from their arrest to their arraignment or release. Lo expressed confidence in the outcomes of the workshop and encouraged full participation to reach consensus recommendations that will durably strengthen the protection of the rights of individuals deprived of liberty.
The registry, which is currently under validation, aims to prevent arbitrary detentions, reinforce judicial oversight through stricter monitoring of detention sites, and harmonize registration practices among various services, including police, gendarmerie, and the prison administration.
The workshop is part of a broader initiative to improve the organization and operation of judicial services in Gabon, reflecting a commitment to human rights and the rule of law. It also underscores the importance of regional collaboration in strengthening legal architecture and governance.
