Cotonou, Benin — The northern regions of Benin have been addressing a multifaceted crisis, marked by both jihadist activity and severe flooding.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a significant increase in internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country, with the latest figures indicating 32,600 individuals displaced between February 18 and March 11, 2026.
The situation in the northern departments has been worsened by a resurgence of attacks by non — state armed groups, particularly along the border departments that have been affected by the Sahel Central region’s instability.
The jihadist insurgency, which began in late 2021, has seen an escalation in violence, primarily at the hands of Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State’s Sahel Province (ISSP).
In response to this crisis, the Beninese Agency for Civil Protection (ABPC) has been conducting periodic evaluations in several communes, collaborating with the IOM to assess locations hosting displaced populations.
The latest assessment, in July 2025, covered 254 localities in 11 communes of the Alibori and Atakora departments.
The displacement crisis is not only a humanitarian issue but also has broader implications for the region.
The recent increase in IDPs underscores the urgency of addressing the root causes of the conflict, including the need for effective governance, economic development, and security sector reform.
The international community must work closely with the Beninese government and relevant stakeholders to provide necessary support for the displaced populations and to stabilize the region. Adequate support for the displaced populations, including access to basic services, shelter, and livelihood opportunities, is crucial.
As the situation in northern Benin continues to evolve, it is essential for the international community to remain engaged and to provide the necessary support to address the humanitarian and development challenges posed by the displacement crisis.
