The ministry has not specified the number of Botswana nationals involved but has reported that individuals were promised lucrative job opportunities and incentives, only to be coerced into combat. The Stop Russian Recruiters platform, affiliated with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, has identified nearly 3,000 African recruits, with one in six already reported as killed in action. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has confirmed that at least 1,780 young Africans from 36 countries are currently serving in the Russian army in Ukraine, many having traveled under false pretenses. Kenya’s foreign minister has echoed Botswana’s concerns, demanding that Russia cease the recruitment of Kenyan citizens, with over 1,000 Kenyans identified as having traveled to Russia to fight.
