Johannesburg, South Africa — The Botswana Ministry of International Relations has sounded the alarm regarding an escalating number of its citizens falling prey to fraudulent recruitment schemes. These schemes, which have been linked to involvement in Russia’s military conflict, have led to distress calls from individuals who were deceived into accepting offers of overseas work before being coerced into combat.
The ministry’s statement advised Batswana to exercise caution when considering employment abroad, noting that criminal networks are exploiting job seekers through deceptive recruiting operations.
The situation has become increasingly urgent, with the ministry reporting a concerning rise in the number of Batswana being misled into such arrangements. Amidst these concerns, a recent study by the nonprofit organization INPACT, through its All Eyes on Wagner initiative, revealed that more than 1,400 Africans from various countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa, were reportedly deceived into joining the conflict in Russia between 2023 and 2025.
The study indicated that at least 316 of these recruits perished during the fighting.
The Botswana government’s warning echoes similar concerns from other African nations. For instance, Kenya’s Foreign Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, has reminded parliamentarians that Kenyan residents cannot serve in foreign military services without government clearance, emphasizing that joining a foreign military without authorization is a criminal offense that can result in up to ten years in jail.
As the conflict in Ukraine persists, the exploitation of vulnerable job seekers across Africa remains a pressing issue.
The situation underscores the need for heightened vigilance and awareness among African citizens regarding fraudulent recruitment schemes and the collaboration of governments and international organizations to combat this growing trend of human trafficking and forced recruitment.
