LIBREVILLE, Gabon — In a significant move to consolidate political support, the political allies of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and his political formation, the Union démocratique des bâtisseurs (UDB), gathered in Libreville, the nation’s capital, on Thursday. The national daily L’Union reported that the purpose of the meeting was to establish a majority government. During the assembly, participants discussed the framework of the impending political coalition.
Vice — President of the UDB, Serge Maurice Mabiala, explained that this initiative reflects the President’s desire to unite political formations that share his vision in a spirit of unity. Mabiala quoted President Oligui Nguema, who “has given clear guidelines and expressed his willingness to see all political formations that have supported him, that have accompanied the advent of the Fifth Republic, as well as his social project, gather around him to carry out a common political action in a democratic, republican, and fraternal spirit.”Secretary General of the UDB, Mays Mouissi, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need to harmoniously implement the social project favored by the Gabonese people. He stated that the President founder of the UDB wishes to promote an inclusive approach by gathering around him all political actors sharing his vision for Gabon.
Among the parties that participated in this meeting were the Union nationale (UN), the Union pour la République (UPR), and the Sociaux-démocrates gabonais (SDG). These formations welcomed the initiative, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen cohesion within the current political context.
A notable aspect of the meeting was the presence of the former ruling party, the Parti démocratique gabonais (PDG), represented by its President, Blaise Louembé. Despite losing power on August 30, 2023, the PDG has since positioned itself as a supporter of the President, having called on its members to vote for the UDB candidate during the presidential election on April 12. This meeting comes two months before the entry into force of the new law on political parties. In a recent communiqué, the Interior Ministry called on political formations to comply with the new law before June 27.
