Johannesburg, South Africa — 2026-01-11 Joint BRICS Naval Drills Begin Amidst Global Maritime Tensions.
The weeklong ‘Will for Peace 2026’naval drills involving key members of the BRICS bloc, including China, Russia, and Iran, commenced off the coast of South Africa this weekend.
The exercises, led by China, are taking place in Simon’s Town and are aimed at enhancing maritime security and cooperation among the participating nations.
According to local reports, the drills involve warships from Russia, China, Iran, and South Africa, with significant contributions from the Russian and Chinese navies.
The exercises include drills on rescue and maritime strike operations, as well as technical exchanges, according to China’s Ministry of National Defence.
The drills come amid heightened global maritime tensions, particularly following the recent seizure of a Venezuela — linked Russian oil tanker by the United States.
The seizure, which the US said was in violation of Western sanctions, followed a military operation that led to the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Despite the invitation, India and Brazil chose not to participate in the drills. While Brazil joined as an observer, India’s absence is seen as a strategic decision to balance its ties with the United States.
India’s purchase of Russian oil has been a major point of contention between the two countries. Officials commented on the matter. “India would prefer not to be tagged in the BRICS wargames, “he added, noting that New Delhi is uncomfortable with the gradual evolution of BRICS’s foundational nature.
The South African Department of Defence stated that this year’s exercise reflects the collective commitment of all participating navies to safeguard maritime trade routes, enhance shared operational procedures, and deepen cooperation in support of peaceful maritime security initiatives.
The drills are seen as a significant response to global maritime tensions and are meant to enhance maritime security cooperation among the participants, according to independent observers. Further details are expected as the exercises continue, with regional officials confirming that the event is more than just a military exercise, but also a statement of intent among the BRICS group of nations.
