Harare, Zimbabwe — In a groundbreaking initiative, the Climate Action Network Zimbabwe (CANZIM) has donated a 3. 5kVA solar power system to Thomas Coulter Primary School, marking a significant stride in sustainable education and green employment opportunities.
The system was officially handed over during a ceremony attended by government officials, community leaders, educators, and students.
The donation is part of CANZIM’s commitment to bridging the gap between national climate policies and local action, ensuring that climate policies translate into tangible benefits for communities.
The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 7, aiming for universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy.
The solar system’s installation at Thomas Coulter Primary School is expected to enhance the school’s educational environment, enabling better digital learning and administrative functions. Moreover, the project has equipped approximately 35 young people from Hwange with practical skills in solar system installation and maintenance, preparing them for green jobs in the renewable energy sector. Wellington Madumira, National Coordinator of CANZIM, emphasized the importance of energy as an enabler of development sectors such as education, health, agriculture, and business.
He highlighted the youth training program’s alignment with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and its contribution to the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3. 0).
The practical training was facilitated by Twin Solar Company, which has pledged to continue offering free solar installation and maintenance training to interested young people from Hwange. This commitment aims to foster a skilled workforce capable of driving Zimbabwe’s green economy.
The event featured poetry performances by learners, showcasing the importance of renewable energy in education, environmental protection, and climate action. Hwange District Schools Inspector Mr. Moyo commended CANZIM for investing in education through renewable energy, advocating for the replication of similar initiatives across the district.
Acting Head of Thomas Coulter Primary School, Ms. Dube, expressed gratitude for the timely donation, noting its potential to improve teaching and learning at the school.
The initiative reflects the growing recognition that climate action must encompass education, employment creation, and community empowerment.
