In Libreville on April 10, 2026, experts from the member states of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) engaged in a regional workshop focused on the methodological guide for the development of the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (IHPC). This event, as noted by the Gabonese Press Agency, was crucial for ensuring the harmonization, reliability, and comparability of price data across the subregion.
The workshop aimed to bolster the technical skills of officials from national and international statistical institutions, thereby guaranteeing consistent, credible, and comparable data production on prices at the subregional level. In his remarks, the Director General of Statistics for CEMAC, Roland Marc Lontchi, expressed gratitude to his partners and emphasized the importance of credibility and participation: “The harmonization of the IHPC is a cornerstone for the credibility of our economies. By strengthening our methods, we provide decision-makers with reliable tools to anticipate and better respond to price fluctuations.”.
This workshop is part of a series of efforts to harmonize statistical practices in the subregion. In 2023, a meeting of the CEMAC IHPC steering committee in Brazzaville highlighted the need for consistent data to guide public policy. Similar regional initiatives confirm the States’commitment to consolidating economic integration through modern and shared statistical tools.
The regional workshop comes at a time when Gabon and other CEMAC member states are focusing on various aspects of national development. For instance, the Francophonie has commended Gabon for a peaceful electoral transition. In the sports realm, Gabonese officials Pierre Atcho, Amos Abeigne, and Boris Ditsoga have been selected as referees for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Additionally, the municipal council of Makokou in the Ogooué-Ivindo region has approved a budget of over 743 million FCFA, while the Haut-Haut-Ogooué region has welcomed Ulrich Maurfy Moussouari Wagna as the new provincial delegate. Professional elections in the public, parapublic, and private sectors are scheduled for April 22, and the Libreville municipal council has opened its ordinary session to adopt the 2026 budget.
