BANGUI, Central African Republic — July 23, 2026 In the Central African Republic (CAR), a humanitarian crisis is deepening amidst ongoing security concerns.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the situation in Mbomou Prefecture, particularly in the South-East, has reached critical levels. Amidst the turmoil, more than 1,800 people have received medical assistance through mobile clinics in Am-Dafock.
In Zémio, 300 returnee households have been provided with essential household items and non-food items.
However, the situation is further complicated by the abduction of approximately 20 people, including children, in Tandjia village.
The health sector is also under immense pressure. Between 10 and 20 July, seven new suspected cholera cases were reported, bringing the cumulative total to 650 suspected cases and 44 deaths.
The Ministry of Health, with support from various organizations, is working to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and provide treatment to those affected. Despite these efforts, the security situation remains volatile.
The Central African Armed Forces (FACA) have launched search operations in response to the abduction of children, while local authorities are conducting community awareness-raising activities to mitigate the risks.
The humanitarian needs in CAR are vast, with millions facing acute food insecurity.
The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) are demonstrating ongoing international engagement and concern, but the situation requires a coordinated and sustained effort from the international community to address the underlying causes of the crisis and support the recovery and resilience of the affected populations.
