Libreville, Gabon — March 8, 2026 (AGP) – Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister and member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, has highlighted the enduring strength of the Sino-African friendship during a press conference in Libreville.
The event coincided with the annual sessions of the African Union Peace and Security Council and the Conference on the Coordination of Chinese Aid to Africa.
In his remarks, Wang Yi emphasized the resilience and vitality of the Sino — African bond, noting that the relationship has withstood international challenges over the past 70 years.
He stated that the Chinese Foreign Minister traditionally dedicates the first foreign trip of the year to Africa, a practice that has been consistent for 36 years, reflecting China’s unwavering commitment to its diplomatic relations. Wang Yi recounted the historical visit of Premier Zhou Enlai to Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Tanzania, and highlighted the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, a project that saw many Chinese engineers and technicians making the ultimate sacrifice.
He praised the selfless dedication and considerable sacrifice of both Chinese and African generations in fostering this friendship.
The Foreign Minister also praised President Xi Jinping’s dedication to the Sino-African relationship, noting his advocacy for the principles of sincerity, effectiveness, friendship, and mutual trust, as well as the pursuit of the greatest common good and shared interests. Wang Yi highlighted President Xi’s active engagement with Africa, including his messages of congratulation sent during the first two months of the year. He announced that the China-Africa Community with a Shared Future will continue to make strides, with several African leaders expected to visit China in 2026.
Wang Yi also mentioned the implementation of the zero — tariff policy for 100% of African products from March 1, 2026, and the launch of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges, which includes nearly 600 diverse activities aimed at fostering mutual inspiration and cultural exchanges. Wang Yi concluded by affirming China’s commitment to strengthening mutual support with Africa, its time-honored partner, and to inscribing new chapters in the shared future of Sino-African cooperation.
