Congo — Brazzaville Presidential Election: Seven Candidates Compete in March 15 Poll. The election campaign officially commenced last Saturday, amid a tense and uneven political climate between the ruling power and the opposition, according to the Agence congolaise de Presse.
The incumbent President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, who is 82 years old and has been in power for over four decades, is leading the list of candidates validated by the Constitutional Court. President Sassou Nguesso is running for another term under the banner of the Parti congolais du travail (PCT), with a stated goal of continuing his “efforts of development.”Opposing him are six other candidates who have been authorized to campaign.
Among them are several well — known political figures, including Joseph Kignoumbi Kia Mboungou, a deputy and president of the party La Chaîne, who is running for his fifth attempt at the presidency; Anguios Nganguia Engambé of the Parti pour l’Action de la République; and Uphrem Dave Mafoula, an ex-candidate who ran in 2021.
The presidential race also features newer candidates, such as Vivien Romain Manangou, a university professor; Zinga Mabio Mavoungou, a former deputy; and Melaine Destin Gavet Elengo, a representative of the Mouvement Républicain.
The first round of voting is set for 15th March, which will pit these seven candidates against each other in the bid to become the President of the Republic for the next five years.
The election comes at a critical time for Congo — Brazzaville, as the nation seeks to navigate its political and economic challenges.
