Dominic Frimpong, a promising young footballer from Ghana, met a tragic end during an armed robbery on his club team, Berekum Chelsea’s, bus. The incident occurred on Sunday, as the team was en route back to Berekum from an away match in the Ghana Premier League. The attack took place between Goaso and Bibiani, as the team traveled from Samreboi in the southern part of the country.
In a harrowing account, the club revealed that masked robbers wielding guns and assault rifles ambushed the team bus. The attackers began shooting as the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle, prompting the players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for safety. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the devastating news on Monday, announcing that the 20-year-old Frimpong had succumbed to his injuries.
The GFA expressed profound shock and deep sorrow over the loss of Frimpong, who was not only a valued member of Berekum Chelsea but also a rising star in Ghanaian football. In a statement, the association highlighted Frimpong’s dedication and passion for the game, which he embodied throughout his career. The GFA also announced plans to enhance security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions in an effort to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This incident echoes a similar attack that occurred in 2023, when the Legon Cities’ team bus was targeted following a match at Samartex. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident. The loss of Frimpong serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by athletes and the need for increased security measures in the world of sports.
