Dorcas Aid International Steps Up Emergency Response for Displaced Families in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia BODY: In the Ethiopian town of Debre Birhan, a growing displacement crisis has seen thousands flee violence and insecurity in the surrounding regions.
The town, which has become a refuge due to its relative safety and access to basic services, now faces overwhelming pressure from the influx of displaced people.
A rapid needs assessment by Dorcas Ethiopia has identified critical gaps in food security, shelter, and non — food items, health, water, sanitation, and protection.
The organization is launching an emergency response from August 1 to October 31, 2026, to support 500 newly arrived displaced households, reaching over 2,500 people. During this three-month period, Dorcas will provide immediate cash assistance combined with protection support, enabling families to meet their urgent needs while strengthening their safety, dignity, and wellbeing.
The cash assistance will allow families to prioritize their needs, including food, hygiene items, essential household goods, temporary shelter materials, health — related costs, or other expenses. Dorcas Ethiopia’s local presence and coordination with local authorities, financial service providers, IDP and host community representatives, and humanitarian partners ensure a practical and accountable response.
The project aims not only to act quickly but also to do so in a way that is inclusive and rooted in the realities of the communities served.
