KINSHASA, DRC — The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the response to the Ebola outbreak declared in Ituri province.
The Minister of Communication and Media, Patrick Muyaya, emphasized the need for robust measures, including enhanced community engagement and support for healthcare workers.
The government has implemented a robust response strategy, which includes the provision of care for patients, community awareness campaigns, and support for medical personnel. Muyaya highlighted the importance of community involvement, urging local leaders, religious figures, and other stakeholders to participate in the sensitization efforts.
In a recent statement, the Minister commended the dedication of medical staff and other responders, ensuring that their concerns regarding compensation, working conditions, and risks are being addressed by the government in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The outbreak has presented unique challenges, with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola displaying symptoms that can be confused with malaria. This necessitates early diagnosis and increased public awareness, as Muyaya explained during a local radio program. Research efforts are underway at the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) to develop treatments and, ultimately, a vaccine tailored to the Bundibugyo strain.
The government has also reinforced detection and care capacities in affected areas, setting up hundreds of beds, contact tracing mechanisms, and surveillance at entry points.
The government is working closely with local authorities, traditional leaders, religious figures, motorbike associations, transporters, and community influencers to improve public awareness and adherence to prevention measures.
As the DRC government continues its efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak, the next steps will include monitoring the situation’s evolution and implementing additional measures as necessary to protect public health and safety.
