Kampala, Uganda — The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda are facing a severe Ebola outbreak, with the Bundibugyo ebolavirus posing a significant challenge.
As of June 2, 2026, the DRC reported 363 confirmed cases and 62 deaths, while Uganda reported 15 cases and 1 death.
The lack of a vaccine or specific treatment complicates the response efforts.
The outbreak has expanded across three provinces in the DRC, affecting 25 health zones, and is occurring amidst conflict, limited access, and a fragile health system. UNICEF’s six-month response plan targets 3. 7 million people, with 150 metric tons of supplies delivered to Bunia, and 36 staff deployed to support the response.
In Uganda, UNICEF is supporting the national response across 37 high-risk districts and greater Kampala. Community engagement is crucial, with 1,300 community health workers and 24 “Decontamination Teams “trained and deployed across high-priority health zones.
