ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dispatched a Long-Term Election Observation Mission (LTEOM) to Benin in preparation for the presidential election set for April 12, 2026. The mission, endorsed by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray, is designed to foster a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.
The LTEOM, comprising 15 election experts from member states, is set to operate in Benin from March 22 to April 18, 2026. These experts, with backgrounds in constitutional law, diplomacy, electoral operations, and more, will conduct a thorough assessment of the electoral environment, monitor regional developments, and offer early analysis to prevent tensions and enhance public confidence.
In addition to the LTEOM, ECOWAS has established a situation room to monitor political and security dynamics across Benin and provide daily updates to the Commission. This room will also facilitate the coordination of a Short-Term Observation Mission, anticipated to involve approximately 100 observers closer to the election date.
The LTEOM’s deployment adheres to key regional instruments, including the 1993 Revised ECOWAS Treaty and the 2001 Additional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. It follows a pre-election fact-finding mission that engaged with government officials, political parties, civil society, and the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) of Benin. ECOWAS emphasizes its dedication to promoting transparent elections, democratic governance, peace, and stability in West Africa.
