Johannesburg, South Africa — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its intention to introduce a single regional currency, the ECO, by 2027. This announcement follows the conclusion of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which took place in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
The ECO is poised to replace the diverse currencies currently in use across West Africa, including the CFA franc and national currencies such as the Nigerian naira and the Ghanaian cedi.
The ECO’s introduction will be a phased process, prioritizing countries that meet specific convergence criteria, including inflation, debt levels, and monetary stability. While the legal registration of the ECO trademark has been completed, the broader framework for the currency is still being refined.
