Egypt Launches Privatization Bid for Hurghada International Airport. Cairo, Egypt — December 11, 2025 Egypt’s civil aviation ministry has announced the opening of bids for private entities to manage, operate, and develop Hurghada International Airport, the country’s second-largest airport and a key gateway to the Red Sea’s tourism sector.
The move marks the first phase of a larger plan to privatize operations at 11 Egyptian airports.
In a statement, Egypt’s civil aviation ministry clarified that applications for the bid are open to single legal entities or consortia of companies, institutions, or other commercial entities. This initiative is in line with the government’s broader strategy to enhance airport efficiency and maximize economic returns for the nation.
The Egyptian government sought support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an entity of the World Bank Group, in March to introduce public-private partnerships at selected airports.
The Civil Aviation Ministry has emphasized that the strategy aims to improve service quality for passengers and boost the competitiveness of the country’s civil aviation system.
According to the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation, Egyptian airports served over 50 million passengers on nearly 400,000 flights in 2024.
The privatization bid is part of Egypt’s efforts to attract foreign investment and modernize its aviation infrastructure.
Regional officials confirmed that the government hopes this step will lead to improved service and infrastructure at the airport. Further details regarding the bidding process and the expected timeline for the privatization are expected to be announced in the coming days.
