Cairo, Egypt — Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi pledged unbroken support for Somalia’s sovereignty on Sunday during talks with his Somali counterpart, warning that any challenge to Mogadishu’s territorial unity would endanger the wider Horn of Africa. El-Sisi told reporters after the meeting at Al-Ittihadiya Palace that recognizing parts of Somalia as independent “would constitute a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the rules of international law. ” Without naming Somaliland, he said such a step would set “a dangerous precedent that threatens the stability of the entire region.
” According to local reports, the two presidents directed their delegations to expand cooperation on security and development, with future Egyptian involvement foreseen in the African Union mission to Somalia.
A joint communiqué underlined both leaders’ “dedication to upholding Somalia’s unity” and their shared goal of preventing any legal or diplomatic recognition of separatist claims. Addressing the media, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked Egypt for its “firm rejection” of attempts to fragment Somalia.
Official statements released from both capitals confirmed the parties also reviewed maritime security in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, areas both men described as critical to Arab and African interests.
Guard of honour ceremonies and an official luncheon marked the one — day visit; further technical talks will be held later this month.
