JOHANNESBURG — The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has initiated the second and final voter registration weekend in preparation for the 2026 Local Government Elections. Spokesperson Themba Gadebe announced that individuals can register in person on August 1 and 2, while an online registration portal is available for those who prefer to register from the comfort of their homes.
The IEC has made significant strides in voter registration, with nearly 3 million citizens responding to the call during the previous registration weekend on June 20 and 21. This included 477,174 first-time registrations and 2. 4 million voters updating their details.
The voter roll saw a notable increase, with more than 785,078 young people aged 16 to 29 participating in the registration process.
An ID is a crucial requirement for both in — person and online registration.
The IEC has also introduced a data — free online registration portal to make the process more accessible to all South Africans. Despite these efforts, the IEC has highlighted a concerning statistic: over 70% of South Africans aged between 18 and 19 are still not registered to vote.
The commission is committed to ensuring that as many citizens as possible have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
As South Africa gears up for the final voter registration weekend, the IEC is urging all eligible voters to take advantage of this final opportunity to register and have their say in the upcoming elections.
The countdown to the 2026 Local Government Elections is well underway, and the IEC remains dedicated to facilitating a fair and inclusive electoral process.
