Antananarivo, Madagascar — Authorities in Madagascar have detained a French national, identified as a former serviceman, in connection with an alleged plot to destabilize the nation.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of involvement in a conspiracy that included sabotage of critical infrastructure and incitement to unrest among security forces.
The alleged plot, scheduled for April 18, 2026, was said to involve the disruption of power lines and thermal plants, as well as attempts to incite mutiny within the security forces and mobilize young people to create unrest. This information was shared by Prosecutor Nomenarinera Mihamintsoa Ramanantsoa during a video statement.
In addition to the French national, other alleged accomplices, including a Malagasy army officer, have been charged in connection with the supposed plot.
The authorities have also cited a WhatsApp group named ‘Revolution of the Brave Citizens’as evidence of the planned unrest. Following the allegations, Madagascar’s foreign ministry expelled a French diplomat, whom the country accused of involvement in destabilizing efforts. France has refuted the accusations, stating that they are unfounded and incomprehensible given the consistent support provided by France.
The detained French national is currently being held in pretrial detention at Tsiafahy maximum — security prison, along with the other suspects. Madagascar’s Gen Z protesters, who were instrumental in toppling the previous government, have expressed concern over the current situation, with some warning against the hijacking of the rebellion. This incident has raised questions about the state of security and political stability in Madagascar, as well as the nature of its relations with France.
As the investigation continues, the international community is closely monitoring the situation.
