Africa Newsroom — Libreville, Gabon — In a landmark move aimed at enhancing the management and efficiency of development projects, the Gabonese government has established a National Steering Committee for projects funded by the Presidential Transition Fund (PTF). This newly formed committee, helmed by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, is poised to transform how external funding is utilized in the country.
The creation of this committee comes in the wake of the Gabonese government’s commitment to improving the coordination of development projects, ensuring that they align with national priorities as outlined in the National Transition Development Plan (PNDT). This strategic approach is designed to maximize the impact of the resources allocated to these projects, thereby fostering sustainable growth and development.
In March 2025, a preparatory meeting was held for the joint Government-PTF committee on external funding. This meeting, led by Prime Minister Raymond Ndong Sima and Vice-Prime Minister Alexandre Barro Chambrier, brought together sector ministers to lay the groundwork for the upcoming committee’s meeting on March 14, 2025. The meeting’s focus was on identifying priority projects in critical sectors such as health, energy, education, infrastructure, and agriculture, as well as community programs and basic services.
This National Steering Committee is not the only entity working to advance Gabon’s development goals. The Joint Steering Committee for Sustainable Development Goals (COPIL CONJOINT ODD) also plays a pivotal role. This committee, which requires a quorum of at least two-thirds of its members to validly deliberate, is supported by a Joint Technical Committee (CTC). Additionally, the Steering Committee for the Joint Program for Development Planning and Institutional and Technical Capacity Building, held its first meeting in January 2025. This program, supported by UN agencies in Gabon, aims to strengthen national, sectoral, and local planning.
The establishment of the National Steering Committee for PTF-funded projects is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s development trajectory. By ensuring that development projects are well-coordinated and effectively managed, the committee is poised to enhance the quality of life for Gabon’s citizens and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
