Gabon Loses Over 700 Hectares of Forest to Mining Activities in First Half of 2026 Libreville, Gabon – July 15, 2026 – Gabon has witnessed a substantial loss of forest cover due to mining activities during the first half of 2026. Data from the Gabonese Space Studies and Observations Agency (AGEOS) reveals that 791. 55 hectares of forest have been lost.
This figure includes 706. 16 hectares within mining permit boundaries and 85. 39 hectares outside of authorized zones, indicating encroachments on areas without exploitation titles.
The AGEOS analysis points to the significant contribution of small — scale mining operations, which account for 66. 53% of the recorded deforestation, totaling 469. 82 hectares.
Large — scale mining activities are the second-largest contributors, with 22. 68% of the deforestation, followed by exploration permits.
The AGEOS system monitors over 8 million hectares of Gabon’s territory and 160 mining permits, including 9 large mines, 52 small mines, and 99 research permits.
The agency’s spatial monitoring mechanism is designed to enhance transparency in extractive activities and provide authorities with reliable data for improved governance, environmental compliance, and the fight against deforestation. While the Gabonese government has been working on a strategic plan for the mining sector and the Gabonese National Forest and Development Plan (PNCD) 2026-2030, the loss of forest cover remains a critical issue.
The PNCD aims to align public and private efforts around sustainable growth in mining, agriculture, and ecotourism, ensuring durable and inclusive economic development.
The success of these plans will depend on the government’s ability to implement them effectively and balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
The current situation highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices and responsible mining activities to preserve Gabon’s natural resources and its contribution to global climate change efforts.
