Pretoria — General Sehlahle Masemola, South Africa’s acting National Police Commissioner, has been served with a summons for alleged contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), the first time a sitting head of the police force faces such charges.
The Hawks, the elite crime — fighting unit, completed the docket and handed it to the National Prosecuting Authority this week, officials confirmed. Neither the police ministry nor Masemola’s lawyers have disclosed the value or nature of the transactions under investigation.
Masemola, promoted to the interim post in February after his predecessor’s term ended, had publicly vowed to tighten controls on graft. Court dates will be set once pre-trial procedures are finished, prosecutors.
Anti — corruption watchdogs welcomed the move, noting that PFMA-related prosecutions of active police generals are extremely rare. The police portfolio committee says it will request a formal briefing once charge sheets are publicly available.
