CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Geordin Hill-Lewis has been elected as the new leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s second-largest political party. His ascension to the top post comes amidst a burgeoning political rivalry and shifting voter preferences, as the DA aims to challenge the long-standing dominance of the African National Congress (ANC).
In his acceptance speech, Hill — Lewis expressed his gratitude to the party delegates and vowed to serve with humility and a strong sense of duty. He outlined his commitment to fostering a stronger, more inclusive South Africa, a vision that has resonated with many within the DA. Currently, the DA is part of a coalition government with the ANC, holding six cabinet posts, amidst efforts to restore confidence following years of corruption and mismanagement.
Supporters of Hill — Lewis are optimistic about his leadership. Sanjay Singh, a fervent advocate, praised Hill-Lewis for his dedication to the party’s values and his focus on enhancing the lives of South Africans at the grassroots level. Singh highlighted Hill-Lewis’commitment to diversity and inclusion, which is gaining traction among voters.
Despite the DA’s growing momentum, the ANC remains the most supported party, polling at 38 percent in a recent Ipsos survey. As the ANC prepares for a crucial leadership conference ahead of the 2029 general elections, a successor to President Cyril Ramaphosa has yet to emerge, adding an element of uncertainty to South Africa’s political future.
