Africa Newsroom — Buea, 1 April 2026: The University of Buea has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China CDC and the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to deepen research in public health and microbiology.
A seven — member Chinese delegation led by George Fu Gao, former Director of China CDC, visited the university campus on Wednesday to formalise the agreement. The partnership will be hosted by the university’s Faculty of Health Sciences and is expected to open new avenues for joint research projects, training, and knowledge sharing.
Dr Kouam Fondjo Arnaud, a lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences, initiated the collaboration after a recent research stay at the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he received advanced training and mentorship.
Vice — Chancellor Ngomo Horace Manga welcomed the Chinese delegation, thanked them for supporting Cameroonian education, and pledged sustained implementation of the MoU objectives. “The University of Buea is committed to excellence in research and training,” he.
Following the signing ceremony, the delegation held interactive sessions with faculty staff and students. Presentations outlined the Faculty’s strategic plan for collaborative research, capacity building, and tackling emerging health challenges.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Microbiology, a global centre with six decades of work in microbial resources, pathogenic microbiology, immunology, and biotechnology, will provide technical expertise.
Officials say the agreement positions the University of Buea to grow its international research footprint, boost scientific output, and contribute to global health knowledge.
