Gabon’s Digital Expansion: Biahodjow and Radatel Seek to Bridge the Digital Divide

Gabon’s Minister of Communication and Media, Germain Biahodjow, recently met with Ilan Ziri, the Director General of Radatel, to discuss the expansion of telecommunications and the implementation of universal service in the country.
The focus of their discussion centered on identifying and connecting the “zones blanches, “areas still lacking telecommunications services.
Radatel, having conducted studies across the national territory, identified these underserved regions and proposed solutions to provide internet and mobile phone services, aiming to narrow the digital gap and foster inclusion in rural areas. Initial trials in several villages have shown promising results, connecting previously isolated populations and introducing the internet to children for the first time.
Minister Biahodjow emphasized the government’s commitment to universal service, interconnection of the national territory, and the effective implementation of terrestrial digital television (TNT). He highlighted the importance of relying on trusted technical and financial partners to support these projects while securing investments.
The Minister also announced the continuation of efforts to establish a Public Interest Group (GIP) that will act as the national digital telecommunications operator.
The GIP is expected to strengthen the state’s presence in a strategic sector, extend digital service coverage to the underserved areas, and ensure equitable access to communication services for all populations. Recognizing Radatel’s expertise in telecommunications, Minister Biahodjow expressed his willingness to continue discussions with the company to explore partnership opportunities that align with the government’s goals of digital transformation and territorial development.
