Young Mothers in Port — Gentil Receive Prenatal and Family Planning Awareness BODY: PORT-GENTIL, Gabon – In a significant health initiative held during the Mother’s Day celebrations in Port-Gentil, the provincial capital of Ogooué Maritime in western Gabon, a session of awareness on prenatal care, childbirth, and family planning was organized on Friday.
The event was hosted by Grâce Houagni-Ambouroué, the wife of the mayor and godmother of a social initiative dedicated to young mothers, according to the Gabonese Press Agency.
The session, led by three midwives, aimed to enhance the participants’understanding of the importance of prenatal care. Midwife Adibet Flore-Ayangala emphasized the necessity of starting consultations as early as the first weeks of pregnancy to monitor the fetus’s development and prevent potential complications. She highlighted that these exams help in detecting gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and anticipating the most suitable mode of delivery.
Addressing the preparation for childbirth, Avome Funelle, a midwife at the Regional Hospital of Ntchengué, stressed the importance for pregnant women to choose their healthcare facility in advance and inquire about the delivery list and hospitalization costs. She also warned against certain traditional practices, such as home decoctions and lavements, which could lead to severe complications or even infant mortality.
On family planning, Djoude Nadia, the senior midwife at the Gynecology Service of the CHR de Port — Gentil, presented the appropriate contraceptive methods after childbirth, including microgestational pills for breastfeeding women, the contraceptive implant, and the intrauterine device. She reminded that family planning allows for spacing births, protecting the health of both mother and child, and ensuring appropriate medical care. This initiative seeks to strengthen the knowledge of young mothers in maternal health and encourage practices favorable to safe pregnancies and deliveries.
