Kinshasa, DRC – The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) is intensifying its protective measures in the Central African Republic (RCA), focusing on the safety and dignity of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) amidst volatile security conditions and the spillover effects of the Sudanese crisis.
Parallel to these efforts, neighboring Cameroon is facing economic challenges, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) identifying infrastructure gaps and a shallow financial sector as key barriers to growth.
Under the HCR’s operational strategy, the RCA response prioritizes sustainable solutions for the return of Central African refugees, ensuring their durable reintegration and contribution to national development.
The HCR, in collaboration with the government and partners, provides protection and multi — sectorial assistance to IDPs and refugees, including Tchadians and Sudanese.
In Cameroon, the IMF’s Article IV consultation has outlined the need for economic reforms to bolster the efficiency and resilience of the economy, particularly in light of its status as a Fragile and Conflict Affected State (FCS).
As the HCR continues to provide essential services like healthcare, education, and legal assistance, the agency reports over 1,000 medical consultations in Am-Dafock, with a slight decrease in the cost of primary medical care (PMAS).
However, living conditions for IDPs in Gbazara, Ouham — Fafa Prefecture, have worsened, affecting nearly 4,480 individuals.
The IMF’s analysis suggests that addressing these economic challenges is crucial for fostering sustainable growth and poverty reduction in Cameroon.
The Outlook Series from MacroMicro predicts a divergence in global monetary policy, which could impact liquidity and economic conditions, particularly for countries reliant on external financing like Cameroon.
As the region grapples with these challenges, the HCR’s efforts in the RCA and the economic reforms in Cameroon underscore the importance of regional and international support for both protection and development initiatives.
