Johannesburg, South Africa — In a significant expansion of its commitment to Africa, Google has announced the achievement of a $1 billion investment target on the continent. To further this engagement, the tech giant has launched a new $1 million AI program aimed at supporting African content creators.
The AI program, a collaborative effort with Idris Elba’s Akuna Group, is designed to provide cutting-edge AI tools to approximately 100,000 creators across Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. This initiative is part of Google’s broader strategy to enhance internet capacity, foster digital skills, and promote AI development and startup growth in Africa. At the Africa Cloud Summit in Johannesburg, Google also revealed plans for a connectivity hub in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, which is part of a larger plan to establish four such hubs across the continent.
These hubs are intended to bolster internet resilience and capacity, connecting Africa to global markets via the Umoja subsea cable and a new route to India.
The AI lab in Ghana, Africa’s first applied AI lab, will serve as a bridge between local startups and Google’s researchers, offering early access to AI models. This partnership aims to foster innovation and growth within the region’s creative sector. Google’s Senior Vice President for Research and Technology, James Manyika, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “The AI opportunity for Africa is significant, and Google is committed to doing our part working with Africans to help Africa realize it. “.
The announcement of the AI program and the investment milestone underscore Google’s long-term strategy for Africa, which includes not only technology and connectivity but also the empowerment of local communities through digital innovation. This approach is expected to have a far-reaching impact across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
